Buying a home? Check out free seminar Saturday

LAKE WYLIE -- A free home buyers seminar, "Increase Your Buying Power," will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the conference room at First Properties of the Carolinas on S.C. 49.

Angie McCarter, a licensed mortgage consultant who has lived in Lake Wylie for eight years, will present the seminar to help participants learn more about how credit scoring affects buying power, as well as how conventional loans differ from government loans. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

McCarter has been with Coastal, a direct lender mortgage bank with control over the entire process through closing, for more than 15 years. She is a member of River Hills Community Church, where she teaches the 3- to 5-year-old Sunday school.

York County Day Wednesday

COLUMBIA -- The 21st annual York County Day will be held Wednesday at the Clarion Town House Hotel in Columbia. with registration beginning at noon

The Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell's address is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., followed by top level representatives from the state leading afternoon informational sessions. Speakers include: Dr. Jim Rex, S.C. Superintendent of Education; Dr. Garrison Walters, director of S.C. Higher Education Commission; Reba Campbell, S.C. Municipal Association, Otis Rawl, S.C. Chamber of Commerce; Bobby Bower, director of office of statistics and research. The Legislative reception follows at 5:30 p.m.

Organized by the Council of Chambers of York County, this event allows local business leaders the opportunity to learn more about current issues affecting business in York County and the state.

Terex acquires Hydra Platforms

ROCK HILL -- Rock Hill-based Hydra Platforms, founded by Garth E. McGillewie Sr. of Lake Wylie, has been acquired by the Terex Corp., according to a Terex news release.

Hydra Platforms is a manufacturer of truck- and trailer-mounted under-bridge access equipment used for bridge construction, maintenance and inspection. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hydra Platforms will become part of the Terex Roadbuilding segment and will work with the company's Bid-Well subsidiary, the release states. Bid-Well is the leading manufacturer, seller and service provider of bridge paving equipment in the United States.

Ice cream store to serve breakfast

FORT MILL -- SweeTreats in Baxter Town Center is more than just ice cream. New owners Anita and Jose Sayago plan to offer an expanded menu, including breakfast.

"We'll have artisan breads, gourmet coffee, sandwiches and breakfast fare freshly baked," said Anita Sayago, a New York native. Jose Sayago hails from Spain and hopes to include some European offerings soon as well.
