NEW ART GUILD
A new Art Guild will meet at 10 a.m. April 17 at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill. A business meeting will be held to select a name of the new guild and to review by-laws and a mission statement developed by the appropriate committees. Future monthly meetings will be held at 10 a.m. the second Thursday of the month. Following the business meeting, artist Eileen Nichols will talk about her career and give a tour of her studio at the Center for the Arts. DINOS IN CHARLOTTE
"Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries" exhibit opens April 18 through Aug. 17, Discovery Place, 301 N. Tryon St., Charlotte. The exhibition explores how modern discoveries and complex analysis are painting a new picture of dinosaur biology. After wandering through a 700-square-foot, walk-through diorama featuring more than 35 ancient species, viewing a feathered dinosaur cast, watching a robotic Tyrannosaurus rex run, touching a real Triceratops horn and exploring interactive computer simulations and animations, visitors will never think of dinosaurs the same way again. Guests can immerse themselves in a time when dinosaurs ruled the roost by completing their exhibition experience with "Dinosaurs Alive!," showing in The Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theatre. WALK FOR CURE
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's 18th annual Walk to Cure Diabetes, 8:30 a.m. April 19, Carowinds, rain or shine. The four-mile walk will begin and end at the Paladium Amphitheatre, taking participants along a scenic path through the 112-acre park. Almost 6,500 participants last year raised more than $1.75 million. Walkers who raise $200 or more receive a free one-day pass to Carowinds, a Charlotte Bobcats ticket voucher for one game during the 2008- 2009 season, a ticket to a Charlotte Knights baseball game, a Wendy's single combo meal coupon, ticket to Charlotte Checkers hockey game (2008-2009 season) and T-shirt. The Schiele Museum of Natural History's Earth Day celebration will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. April 20 at the museum, 1500 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, N.C. There will be two puppet shows by Paperhand Puppet Intervention, including The Crawdad's Conundrum, right, presented at 2 and 4 p.m. in the North Carolina Hall. At 3 p.m., Paperhand leads the museum's first All Species Parade throughout the building, into the parking lot, along the nature trail and onto the Backcountry Farm. Visitors may come in costume as their favorite plant or animal or make masks at the event. Bring a drum and join in the festivities or grab a recycled noisemaker. Exhibitors from beekeepers to creative writers and from storytellers to historic building preservationists will spill out of the museum and onto the trail. Visitors will be able to get their gas caps checked for leaks; learn about drought-resistant gardening; biofuels and solar power. They also can find out where their food comes from; how to make rain barrels; why they should eat organic foods; how to make and teach with puppets, and much, much more.
