Dining out: Lake Wylie Pizza serves grand Italian

May 6, 2008

Eggplant parmigiana sub is served footlong at Lake Wylie Pizza & Italian Restaurant in Lake Wylie.

Along S.C. 49, just after the Buster Boyd Bridge, is a road-frontage Italian restaurant where six outdoor umbrella tables seat five each, a great way to enjoy springtime in Lake Wylie.

If the allergies get to you and traffic noise is heavy, step inside for a Tuscan feel with black slate tile floors, stucco mustard-yellow walls adorned with Italy-themed artwork and the home ambiance of ceiling lighted fans -- minus the smoking, and there's even high chairs for children.

My friend and I were very hungry when we went for a late lunch. We took a seat outside and a waitress quickly came for our drink order while we perused the menu. It includes typical Italian fare like fettucine Alfredo, lasagna chicken parmigiana, sausage and peppers, and pasta primavera ($10.95), ravioli and baked ziti ($10.25), and shrimp fettucine and chicken penne ($13.95). There's also create-your-own pizza, calzones, and stromboli, as well as a menu for bambinos ($3.25 to $3.95).

My friend headed for the lunch specials ($5.95 to $7.25) ,delighting in the three-cheese calzone about as big as, if not bigger than, her 8-inch shoe size.

I ordered off the Sandwiches & Hoagies ($6.95 to $7.95), not able to pass up a foot-long eggplant parmigiana sub. The eggplant was excellent, crisp (not soggy at all), and I could taste it among the wonderful mixture of melted cheese and marinara sauce. And the slightly toasted bread -- oh, the bread -- is, as Martha Stewart might tell viewers, a good thing.

Our meals came with salads, too, that curbed our hunger pangs until our dishes were delivered. Everything was served like clockwork -- never waiting or wanting, including filling our beverages.

Some nights, diners get to enjoy eating with jazz tunes in the background as a local live band plays, according to a sign out front. This is definitely a casual, family-friendly restaurant that offers plenty of choices and grand servings that will leave everyone saying "grazie."
