Dining out: Fired up for Brixx Wood pizza

Brixx in Charlotte specializes in wood-fired pizzas including the Rustica, with proscuitto, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, black olives and roasted garlic. The dessert list includes tiramisu, below.


If you like pizza and beer, put Brixx Wood Fired Pizza on your list. Even if you don't like pizza and beer, put Brixx on your list, because there are plenty of other tantalizing menu items, a weighty 14-wine list (including half-price Sundays) and a children's menu.

And check this out: Children aged 3 to 12 can even make their own pizza creation on Sundays with each adult entrée ordered. (Look online for details and other specials, as well as coupons.)

And Brixx is as much fun for adults as it is for the kids. First off, it's located at the bottom of the musical parking garage, 7th Street Station, where I bring out-of-town visitors, and friends who haven't been, to see and touch the interactive work of art. (FYI: It's also easy for parking if you're going to dine at Brixx and check out other sites or take in a show uptown.)

The funky outdoor, dare I say "Suessian-style," design with patio seating, follows to a wide open indoor dining area with a large bar in the back, where smoking is permitted. The specialty: 24 microbrews and beers on tap from around the world. On Mondays, it's $1.50 for domestic microbrews. Now, that's a deal.

When we came in during the lunch-hour rush on a weekday, despite a growing line, we were seated quickly and well taken care of.

I like Brixx for the gourmet, wood-fired pizzas. I like that they are created for individuals, rather than having to come to a consensus on who likes what. At 10 inches, there's plenty to take home, or naturally, two could share.

On the menu are 17 specialty pizzas ($7.95 to $10.95) ranging from Jerk Chicken and Mexican to Spicy Shrimp or Veggie. While Pilot reporter John Marks had the Bronx Bomber with spicy Italian sausage, prosciutto, gorgonzola cheese, tomato sauce and fresh oregano, I had the Rustica with prosciutto, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, black olives and roasted garlic. We swapped slices, and I couldn't tell you if one was better than the other. Really, it's all good.

And I wouldn't walk away without dessert. The tiramisu ($5.50) is as pretty as it looks, a fantastic cake. There's also ice cream and daily dessert specials.

Now, if you don't want pizza or the beer, there are pasta dishes ($10.95 to $11.95) like Italian Sausage & Sweet Peppers and Shrimp Carbonara, salads ($5.95) like Caesar and Spinach, and sandwiches ($6.95 to $7.95), including Chicken Club, Turkey Wrap, Wild Mushroom and an Italian favorite, Fresh Mozzarella Sandwich.

There's also appetizers. In fact, it was here that I first tried and liked bruschetta. I usually wouldn't touch it because of the tomatoes. But the combination of marinated tomatoes, fresh basil and crumbled feta cheese with garlic crostini ($5.95) is fantastic. Really, Brixx has something for everyone and could fit just about any occasion. Other locations include Dilworth, Foxcroft Village near Southpark and Blakeney in Charlotte, and other locations in North and South Carolina. So hit the Brixx and enjoy.
