Meeting on county multi-use facility Wednesday

YORK -- The York County Convention & Visitors Bureau will update county residents at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21 about the proposed new multi-use facility in York County during a meeting at York County Council Chambers in York.

Representatives from Crossroads Consulting and gh2 Gralla Equestrian Architects will update local stakeholders on the findings resulting from their market research regarding the proposed facility. Crossroads and gh2 also will include a brief discussion about its subsequent work steps that will include a site and financial analysis regarding the proposed facility.

This presentation will be of particular interest to residents involved in agriculture, livestock and equestrian activities. Public input has been sought about the proposed agri-tourism center to host everything from equestrian events to antique tractor shows.

Blood drive to help Cay family

CHARLOTTE -- The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is partnering with Shepeard Community Blood Center, provider of blood to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., to host a blood drive in honor of Connor McKemey and his mother Karin McKemey of Tega Cay.

The public blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Tega Cay Fire Department, 5000 Tega Cay Drive, Fort Mill.

Plasma collected at the blood drive will be sent to the Shepeard Center in support of the McKemey family. Connor, 13, and his mother were injured when an outdoor fire erupted at their home in Tega Cay last month. Connor, was burned over 80 percent of his body and is currently undergoing treatment at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center.

Lake Wylie man charged in fatal wreck

YORK -- A Lake Wylie man was charged Friday morning in connection with a wreck that killed 20-year-old Travis James Pettus of Clover.

Around 9 a.m., authorities charged Jason Truitt Isbell, 20, with felony driving under the influence resulting in a death, said Cpl. Jeff Gaskin of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Before noon, Isbell was released on a $100,000 bond, an official from York County Sheriff's Office said.

Isbell's charge stems from the Nov. 1 single-vehicle collision that happened around 3 a.m. along Ridge Road in Clover. Isbell's vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck some trees and overturned.

Pettus, a passenger in that vehicle, died in the collision. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Isbell was trapped in the jeep and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Isbell's first court appearance is set for March 10.

Super Bowl Party helps Holy Angels

LAKE WYLIE -- A Super Bowl Party to benefit Holy Angels of Belmont will start at 4 p.m. Feb. 1 at The Knothole Saloon. Silent auction items are needed.

Holy Angels is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that employs about 250 people, and provides programs and services to 75 children and adults, ranging in age from 1 to 64 offering programs to help meet the changing needs of people with developmental disabilities, particularly those who are medically fragile.

The Feb. 1 event also includes a Low Country Boil for $5 a plate with all proceeds going to Holy Angels.

Half-time giveaway items already have been donated by The Knothole Saloon, River Rat, David Floyd Signs and more.

Gardendale amendment OK'd

TEGA CAY -- Under a new amendment to the Gardendale development agreement, the city would get a roughly 7-acre tract adjacent to the development where new public safety facilities could be built.

The amendment passed a first reading 4-0 at a Jan. 14 city council meeting. Mayor Bob Runde abstained from the vote because he recently bought the 6.91-acre property included in the amendment and worked with developer Drake Capital on the plan.

Under the plan, Drake will buy the property from Runde, and donate it to the city. In return, the city will apply for federal grant money to pay for construction of sidewalks and walking trails throughout the Lake Ridge (formerly Gardendale) development. The city will be applying for Congestion Mitigation for Air Quality grants from the U.S. government.

Theater seeks new members

FORT MILL -- The Fort Mill Community Playhouse will host its annual membership drive party at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at the theatre at 615 Banks St.

In addition to refreshments, those attending will be treated to entertainment from the spring musical, "The Fantasticks" scheduled to open Feb. 19 and learn all about the 2009 season. An additional show is being added to the regular schedule for a total of five shows this year.

There also will be a silent auction and a chance to win free tickets to shows. The 2009 membership prices go into effect Jan. 25.

Wildlife habitat course slated

YORK -- The three-session Backyard Wildlife Habitat course focusing on the Certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program available through the National Wildlife Foundation will be held Feb. 9, 16 and 23 at the York County Clemson Extension Office.

The classes are taught by professional wildlife biologists from Clemson University, Clemson Extension Service and Palmetto Wildlife Management. Students will leave the course with information and direction needed to develop wildlife habitat on his or her property that is eligible for certification.

Community meeting Feb. 19

STEELE CREEK -- The 2009 Steele Creek Residents Association annual meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at Southwest Middle School, 13624 Steele Creek Road.

Featured speaker will be Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe. The meeting theme is "Our Children Deserve a Safe and Healthy Steele Creek Community."
