The top three spots in Saturday's AAAA Upper State Championship went to high school bands from York County.
Fort Mill High's band took first, capturing its first AAAA Upper State title since 2005 on Saturday. The band had a “superior” rating and a score of 94.275. The event marks Fort Mill's 15th Upper State championship since Upper/Lower State preliminaries started in 1986.
Northwestern High finished second with a “superior” rating with a score of 93.825.
Clover High's band took third with a “superior” rating with a score of 92.375. The band played the music of Ottorino Respighi and Giacomo Puccini. Courtney Wyatt on flugel horn, Michael Smith on sax, Phil Gawronski on baritone and Lindsey Boyd played flawless solos as drum majors Ashley Murphy and Tim Brown led the band through their program entitled “Etched in Stone.”
Fifteen bands competed. The top six bands from Upper State and the top six from Lower State will compete for the AAAA State Championship on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Batesburg-Leesville High School.
