The River Hills Marina Cove Bridge was officially opened Jan. 16 with several residents coming out to inspect the construction craftsmanship first-hand. Marina Club Board Chairman Charles Wood oversaw the event. The bridge is 440-feet long and was constructed with quality treated lumber. Construction plans were developed by a licensed architect and professional engineer and the work was supervised by the same professional engineer.
Materials used were 6-inch to 8-inch treated poles on 8-foot centers driven by a 7,200-pound load until seated in hard clay. The supporting beans are 2-by-12 inches and the cross joists are 2-by-8 inches. Deck boards are 2-by-6 inches. The structure is certified for 100 pounds per square foot load. The bridge has an estimated life span of 30 years and is fully lit using low voltage lights.
Going Green: Please help support the environment by using the 11 recycle bins for plastic bottles and aluminum cans located at the entrance to each of the docks. Keeping our waterways and marina shoreline is a joint responsibility.
Ethanol Alert: Ethanol (E-10) gasoline is becoming more common in our area now. We advise boat owners to check with Chip Krell at Pier 88 by calling 803-831-0088 at the marina or a local boat Repair station about how to help protect your boat engine from potential damage from E-10. Generally, if your boat is not going to be run frequently, keep the gas tank full, add a fuel stabilizer, disconnect the fuel line and idle until the engine stalls. The gas sold at the docks does not contain ethanol and is of a higher octane (89 vs. 87) than other locations on the lake.
Gas Dock Service and other: The gas dock is currently on the winter schedule with full service available on a call-for-appointment basis at 803-831-0088. The water has been turned off to all docks except A-dock because of the cold temperatures.
