LAKE WYLIE --
The Oakridge Middle School eighth-grade boys’ basketball team’s three-game win streak and season came to a close Feb. 8 in a loss against Fort Mill 39 to 32.
The Golden Eagles lost each of the first two quarters by 8 points apiece and found themselves in a deep hole at halftime, trailing 28 to 12. Coming out after the intermission, Fort Mill was whistled for technical foul, and Alex Thompson knocked down 2 free throws to cut into the 16-point deficit.
The Golden Eagles’ defense, which they have prided themselves on in the second half of the season, started coming together. Led defensively by Austin Stollar and Ryan Moore, the Golden Eagles got their hands in the passing lanes, dominated the boards, got a few steals and outscored their opponents 13 to 7 in the third. At the end the quarter, Bobby O’Dell got a tip on a Fort Mill pass, and as he dove on the ball just across half-court, he passed the ball up to Josh Adams, who picked it up right under the basket and put it in at the buzzer giving Oakridge the momentum going into the final period. Entering the fourth quarter, the score was Oakridge 25, Fort Mill 35.
The Golden Eagles played the fourth quarter with the same intensity as they did they third, but Fort Mill slowed it down just enough to hold their lead until the end. Final score: Oakridge 32, Fort Mill 39.
Scoring for the Golden Eagles were: Ryan Moore, 10 pts.; Bobby O’Dell, 9 pts; Austin Stollar, 8 pts; Josh Adams and Alex Thompson, 2 pts. each; and Ryan Fredell, 1 point.
