VBS goes West in Lake Wylie

LAKE WYLIE --

About 80 children recently donned Western wear for Bethel Baptist Church’s Saddle Ridge Ranch vacation Bible school. Even the food went West, with pudding being called cow pies.

After meeting nightly for singing, children would brake off into groups by age for a quick Bible study, crafts and snack time. Each class also had a time for music themed around the same western ranch motif led by Jeff Allen, music director for the church, and Ashley Campbell and Lynn Davis, sound coordinator for the church.

“We are all very passionate about what we do here,” said Allen, who helped coordinate the VBS with his wife, Kelly. “After all, it’s not for us, it’s for the kids.”

Pastor Bart Plaxco helped with recreation time and answered questions about faith. Plaxco said next year, he’d love to see more children from the community come out for Bible school, as well as all yearlong.

“We love being a part of this community,” he said.

Along with the help of many volunteers, others helped make VBS a succès. Brenda L. Brandon of Double B Graphix Screen Printing and Embroidery donated T-shirts in loving memory of Rose Short, a church member who recently died of cancer and had been part of VBS for more than 20 years.

“All of the set decorations, crafts and silliness are not what matters, it’s what the children learn and take with them into their daily lives and for them to leave knowing that someone cares,” Allen said. “Not every child that comes to Bible school knows these stories, and now they can leave knowing them.”

The church is planning a fundraiser later this summer for the youth mission trip to Massachusetts.
