History

The Lake Wylie Pilot is a weekly newspaper with more than 7,000 circulation serving the lakefront communities of Lake Wylie that includes North and South Carolinas, the three counties of York, Mecklenburg and Gaston, and lake communities — Lake Wylie, lower Steele Creek, Clover, Tega Cay and Belmont.

The Pilot was originally called Lake Wylie Magazine, founded by Leonard Short in 1984, and distributed once a month until 1990 when the paper became twice-monthly during the summer months. In March 1992, the paper became a twice-monthly for the entire year. In April 1999, Lake Wylie Magazine expanded full-time to weekly status.

In 2001, the Pilot's current owner — The McClatchy Co., based in Sacramento, Calif. — decided to reinvent the newspaper as a full-size newspaper with new features and expanded coverage. The Lake Wylie Pilot debuted January 1, 2002, publishing on Tuesday.

The Pilot's sister papers include The Herald in Rock Hill, The Charlotte Observer, the Fort Mill Times and the Enquirer-Herald.
