STEELE CREEK --
Palisades Episcopal School middle school students gather every week for M3 (Middle School Morning Meeting) to discuss various topics. The purpose of the M3 is to discuss faith issues and how to apply them in the real world.
Speakers have included Juan Nienes, a retired Major League baseball pitcher and currently a bullpen coach with Chicago White Sox.
On Valentines Day, as part of The Real Meaning of Love, guest speaker Mike Schoonmaker, retired officer with New York Police Department, visited to share his experiences of the events of Sept. 11 and the outpouring of love from so many Americans who changed his life forever.
The students were silent as they learned of his battle with cancer and how he persevered. They heard about him leading a team that searched for survivors at Ground Zero.
I think the kids could relate to him on a personal level and see him as a normal person who dealt with extraordinary events, said Amy Stadler, Middle School director at PES. The students took away that there is always hope and that faith helps you in your life.
The program will culminate with another event called Hanging with the Heroes, where local male heroes will spend one-on-one time with the boys and female heroes will spend time with the girls during an overnight party discuss inner beauty and faith.
