As the Charlotte Knights baseball team sits poised to move on to the big city, we are sad to think York County will be losing the organization. This is a loss, given the wonderful generosity the Knights and EA Sports Fields provided just last week by donating time and services to improve local athletic fields for Lake Wylie Athletic Association.
While the Triple-A team and the city hash out the plans and the team’s request on Thursday for more money from the city to help build a minor-league stadium uptown, our hope is the Charlotte Knights, and York County residents and leaders, know what an asset they have been to our community.
LWAA has had an ongoing partnership with the Knights since their start five years ago, with Homer making appearances on opening.
We’ve been to the Knights opening days, too, which this year begins at 7:15 p.m. April 5. Look for the Knights to be honoring our nation’s military this season, too, with special jerseys.
Access to games has been easy, with little traffic issues to the stadium off Interstate 77 at 2280 Deerfield Drive, Fort Mill. Parking costs $4, sometimes $5 when there’s a special event. The top ticket price is $15. It’s a great deal and great baseball.
The Knights currently draw about 300,000 fans and lose money. The team expects attendance to double uptown.
Perhaps, it’s time to take your children, family and friends out to the ball game before it gets too big, and likely, more expensive.
