Drivers, stay alert driving during holiday

Independence Day is upon us, and the Highway Patrol will be out in force again over this holiday.

We are very anxious to see this July 4 be described as the safest on record. We need your help to accomplish this goal, and here are some reasons why. Despite York County being a wonderful place to live and travel through, we had 22 highway fatalities during 2011. Independence Day should be a great time of reflection and thankfulness as a nation and shouldn’t be marred by the preventable tragedies that happen as the result of an automobile crash.

Last Fourth of July holiday, South Carolina experienced nine fatal crashes during the travel period. Stay alert! Don’t participate in high-risk, and all too often deadly, behaviors, such as drinking and driving, failure to wear a safety belt, exceeding the speed limit and being distracted behind the wheel with a cell phone. Please focus all of your attention on your driving, and please talk to your loved ones about these life-threatening issues. Let’s make York County shine as an example of safe driving.

F/Sgt R.H. Sapp, Commander Troop 4 Post B, SC Highway Patrol
