LAKE WYLIE --
Top anglers in King of the Lake bass fishing series continue to distance themselves from the pack, with just one event remaining before the championship Oct. 20.
In a night tournament July 14, Mike Stephens finished with 12.37 pounds, good for first place and $600. Hunter Hicks finished second with 11.97 pounds and $300, Mike Stone third with 10.02 pounds. The big fish at 4.66 pounds belonged to Cory Stone for $100.
The win was the second for Stephens, who hasn’t finished outside the top four since January. It also snapped a streak of two straight wins for Gene Webster, who didn’t fish the night event. Stephens entered the July 14 event in first place overall, followed by Mike Brehm who finished fifth, Mike Stone and Hicks.
Following the next tournament Oct. 6, the top five points finishers will battle in a no entry fee final Oct. 20 with a guaranteed $5,000 first place prize. Anglers can drop one result from the six-tournament schedule to make their best score heading into the final.
