Belmont Historical Society dinner Aug. 4

The Belmont Historical Society’s inaugural dinner and silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at the American Legion Building. Tickets cost $10 with proceeds going toward a new sign. Ticket sales end Wednesday, Aug. 1. For more information, call 704-825-4848 or email agsummer@bellsouth.net.

BHS recently awarded the 2012 Pat E Haney Scholarship to Ronnie Darrell Black, who will attend UNC-Chapel Hill to major in business. The $1,000 scholarship is presented each year to a student from the Belmont area. The scholarship was started by Jerry Haney in memory of his wife Patricia Ellington Haney.

BHS will hold a bluegrass and bar-b-q bonanza from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 25. The Stowe house and Yates Abernathy mill house will be open for tours during the event. Kyle Fletchers will be catering. Plates cost $7. Riverbend Band from Mount Holly will be performing on the mill house steps from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

4-H Horse Club forming

A new 4-H Equestrian Club for youth ages 9 and older is forming in York County.

An informational meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. tonight, July 31, at the York County Extension Office, 120 N. Congress St.

Sandy Hyrowski, a horse riding instructor and former York County 4-H club leader, will be the leader of the new club. The club will meet monthly a local stable in western York County.

Women’s club gearing up for new year

River Hills Women’s Club annual dues cost $20.

Luncheon meetings with programs are held the third Wednesday of the month, September through May.

To be listed in the yearbook, dues must be in today, July 31.

Mulvaney to speak Aug. 14

in Wylie

U.S. Congressman Mick Mulvaney, representing Dist. 5, will speak at noon Aug. 14 during the Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane.

Mulvaney, a founding member of the Indian Land Rotary, has been named to the House Budget Committee and the Joint House/Senate Economic Committee. He was the co-author of the Cut, Cap and Balance legislation, and he contributed to the Republican Study Committee Budget. He has been appointed chairman of the Small Business Committee’s subcommittee on Contracting and Workforce. The House Republican Conference Policy Committee has tapped him as the chair of its Financial Services Task Force.

A lifelong Carolinas resident, Mulvaney attended Georgetown University where he graduated with honors in international economics, commerce and finance and graduated as an Honor Scholar, the highest award given to students of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill on a full academic scholarship and completed education at Harvard Business School in 2006. He started his own law firm, and later, ran the family real estate business then started a home building company.

He is a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and founding member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Mission. He and wife Pam have triplets.

The club meets every Tuesday. Guests are welcome. Lunch, catered by Christopher’s, costs $9.

New 4-H groups forming in

York County

Two new 4-H groups – for students interested in veterinary science and those who are interested in learning more about photography – are forming in York County.

The veterinary science club will meet once a month at the Fort Mill Library in Baxter Village, beginning at the end of August. Students will learn about what it takes to be a veterinarian. They will study 4-H curriculum materials and have hands-on learning opportunities.

The photography group is for ages 9-12. Meeting place is to be determined. Meetings will be held monthly beginning in August.
