York Co. GOP chairman named to Romney’s black leadership group

- jself@heraldonline.com

Glenn McCall, chairman of the York County Republican Party, has been named to the Black Leadership Council, a group of advisers to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

McCall is one of 18 members of the council selected to advise the Romney campaign on issues affecting black people.

McCall said Thursday it’s an honor to be named to the council.

“The black community,” he said, “we have been devastated under the current administration.

“We all agree that when (President Barack Obama) took over (in 2009) things were bad, but he made it worse with his policies.”

Though the economic slump has affected all of America, it has had a “disproportionate impact on the black community,” he said, citing higher than average unemployment rates and need for education reform.

The Romney campaign’s announcement of the council’s formation comes while the Democrats are holding their presidential nominating convention in Charlotte this week.

The formation of the black leadership council is an attempt to talk about the real issues facing the black community, McCall said, not an effort to “pander” to black voters.

“There’s plenty of diversity within the Republican Party,” he said. “The problem that we see is that the black community continues to marginalize itself and their vote gets taken for granted.”

McCall will serve on the council with U.S. Rep. Tim Scott of Charleston and U.S. Rep. Allen West of Florida.

“Many black Americans across the country cheered when Barack Obama was elected president,” Scott said in a release from the Romney campaign. “Achieving this milestone was a great moment for civil rights, one that reflected the best of this country.

“But we judge President Obama by his policies, not his promises. Those policies have been a disappointment. Black Americans are falling into poverty at an alarming rate, and unemployment rates are rising.

“We need a leader in the White House who knows how to turn this economy around. Mitt Romney has a plan to do just that, and we need him now more than ever.”
