CLOVER The Veterans of Foreign Wars announces that its 2012-2013 scholarship and recognition contests for students and teachers is open, with the deadline for submissions at midnight Nov. 1 to the local Hartman-Parrish VFW Post 6732 of Clover, Lake Wylie and York.
• The “Voice of Democracy Contest” is for ninth-12th graders to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles.
• The “Patriot Pen Contest” is for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students to draft a 300 to 400 word essay, expressing their views on the theme “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”
• The “National Teacher Educational Award Contest” is for three grade level categories: K-5, 6-8, 9-12. In 350 words or less, describe why you feel your nominee is deserving of the award. Be sure to describe the teacher’s innovative teaching and resource development methods, as well as his or her dedication to education.

Students wanted for bank board
ROCK HILL Family Trust Federal Credit Union is looking for students to serve on its Youth Advisory Board, which provides ideas and feedback for products and services that appeal to young people, and helps teach financial literacy to their peers.
The board is made up of teens ages 15 to 17 from York County’s four school districts, private and home schools. They serve a minimum one year and no more than three years.
Meetings are held in Rock Hill the second Tuesday of each month in the afternoon.
No special knowledge is required. Board members will participate in retreats and team-building events and will help with a financial education effort being planned for area schools. High school seniors can apply for a $1,000 scholarship based on participation.
The application deadline is Saturday, Sept. 15. The term of service begins in October.

fall festival
CLOVER Kinard Elementary School will host a fall festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29.

CLOVER The Clover High School Class of 1982 will celebrate its 30-year reunion Sept. 28 at Memorial Stadium as the Clover High School Eagles play the South Point Stallions.

CLOVER Members of the Clover High School Class of 1977 will host their 35-year reunion Sept. 28-29.

Pints for Pencils under way
CHARLOTTE The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is supporting regional public schools through its second annual “Pints for Pencils” campaign.
For each blood donation this month, CBCC will donate $1 for school supplies to the public school systems in the 16 North Carolina counties and three South Carolina Counties they serve, including York County.
Throughout the year, CBCC will offer local students the opportunity to win more than $36,000 in scholarships, including CBCC’s “Students Saving Summer” program that runs through Sept. 3.
For area high school and college students interested, they can host blood drives for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship – a total of five scholarships will be awarded by CBCC.

S.C. student loan’s interest rate is now even lower
COLUMBIA South Carolina Student Loan, the state’s only nonprofit student loan provider, is making it easier for borrowers in South Carolina to get a lower interest rate on their student loan with the Palmetto Assistance Loan. The PAL meets the financial needs of South Carolina residents or those attending an eligible South Carolina institution when grants and scholarships may not provide sufficient means to cover the cost of higher education.
Previously, SCSL’s education loan was at a fixed interest rate as low as 7.15 percent, and it is now even lower with a fixed interest rate starting at 6.75 percent. This lower interest rate will help lessen the burden of education loan debt and is a lower rate than both the Federal Stafford or PLUS loan.
“With the cost of higher education continuing to rise, it is essential for loan providers like us to offer students and parents with alternative education loan options at lower interest rates,” President and CEO Chuck Sanders said. “We strive to be a trusted partner with schools, students and parents of our state in furthering higher education.”
In addition, many lenders require that the entire interest be paid while the student is in school, but SCSL will allow the borrower to choose – pay the interest while enrolled or delay interest payments and only make a minimum payment of $25 per month at a slightly higher interest rate. Creditworthy borrowers or cosigners may also be eligible to receive an origination fee as low as 1 percent.
PAL borrowers may obtain funds up to the cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid. These funds can be used to help pay for a wide variety of educational expenses like tuition and fees, room and board, books, school supplies and transportation.
