LAKE WYLIE --

After a brief hiatus and nearly 2,000 meals served elsewhere, The Community Cafe is coming back to Lake Wylie.

The Lake Wylie Christian Assembly board recently voted to begin serving free lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays at the church, 5766 Charlotte Hwy.

“We felt like it would be great for the community to feed people, and for people who need connection and fellowship,” said Associate Pastor Billy Ginn. “It also will give us an opportunity to meet people in our community, and hopefully, just to serve people.”

Ginn said the church, which has about 700 active members, hopes to have everything up and running within three months.

“We are fortunate and blessed to have facilities to accommodate it,” Ginn said of the gymnasium that can seat up to 500.

Cafe head chef Don Murfin said kitchen improvements will be made to meet South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control improvements.

The free lunch cafe began at River Hills Community Church in January 2010 and expanded last year to a second location at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fort Mill serving dinner. In May, the Lake Wylie cafe was forced to relocate. It reopened in July serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays at Lake Wylie Lutheran Church, S.C. 160 W. and Gold Hill Road.

“God is really working on His cafe,” Murfin said. “It is magnificent to behold.”

Volunteers are needed, and donations are accepted. For information, call 803-548-5489 or 330-289-1243.
