York County Council Dist. 2 candidates to debate

LAKE WYLIE Two candidates forums with York County Council District 2 candidates incumbent Bruce Henderson (R) and challenger John Rinehart (I) are planned Oct. 16.

Lake Wylie Rotary Club will host a debate from noon to 1 p.m. during its regular Tuesday meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane. Allan Gregory will moderate, and questions also will be fielded from audience members.

An evening forum, presented by Lake Wylie and Clover chambers of commerce, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Clover School District Office on Bethel Street.

Conservation group meets Sept. 25

YORK The next commissioners meeting of the York Soil and Water Conservation District will be at 6:30 tonight, Sept. 25, at the USDA Service Center, 1460 E. Alexander Love Hwy., York.

Dementia care seminar Thursday

YORK Agape Senior will be hosting a free informational seminar for anyone affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia called “Welcome to My World” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 22 E. Liberty St.

Meeting location changed

ROCK HILL Congressman Trey Gowdy, representing South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the York County Republican Party at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Thursdays, Too, 147 Herlong Ave.

Gowdy has been in the news recently as part of Congress’ investigation of the Obama Administration’s “Fast and Furious” gun walking scandal. In addition to Gowdy, Raye Felder, republican and petition candidate for new House District 26 in Fort Mill, will speak about her campaign.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Blood drive Saturday

ROCK HILL Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will hold a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at First Calvary Baptist Church, 623 Crawford Road.

Confederate youth day Saturday

LAKE WYLIE The eighth annual York County Confederate Heritage Youth Day will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6198 Lake Wylie Road.

This year’s event will feature cavalry, artillery and infantry demonstrations conducted by re-enactors.

Meet and greet senators Sunday

LAKE WYLIE A reception for incumbent S.C. Sen. Wes Hayes (R-District 15) and special guest S.C. State Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harvey Peeler Jr. (R-District 14) will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at River Hills Marina Tech Center.

The event provides an opportunity for residents living within the redrawn geographic boundaries of District 15 to meet with Sen. Hayes. According to the 2010 US Census, District 15 population growth soared, necessitating the redrawing and condensing of district boundary lines.

The redrawn boundaries encompass areas formerly part of District 14, currently represented by Sen. Peeler.

The geographic reach of District 15 now includes areas south of Highway 49, including River Hills Plantation community, and areas east of Highway 274. Visit yorkcountygov.com for voting information.

Hayes, who has served in the state senate since 1991 and previously for six years in the state house, is seeking re-election in November. Independent Joe Thompson of York also has filed to run for the District 15 senate seat.

Help to stay cool available

YORK COUNTY Carolina Community Actions Inc. has money available to assist low-income families with cooling bills, air-conditioners and fans through Sunday, Sept. 30. Qualification is based on total gross household income during the past 30 days. To qualify for a fan the applicant must be aged 60 or older and has not received a fan from CCA in the past year. A limited supply is available.

Applications are taken 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday at the Apple West Center, 546 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Emergency applications or bills with a cut-off notice are taken on Mondays and Thursdays.

Non-emergency applications are taken on Tuesday and Wednesday at CCA and Clover Area Assistance Center, 1130 Hwy. 55 E.

Men rob drive-thru

FORT MILL Deputies say two men walked to the drive-thru window of a Fort Mill McDonald’s, reached inside and stole the cash register Sept. 17.

Several witnesses told police while they were waiting in the drive-thru line at the McDonald’s on 2883 S.C. 160 W., they saw two men — one wearing a silver mask and blue hoodie — pull the cash drawer out of the wall and run toward Gold Hill Road around 4 p.m., according to a York County Sheriff’s report.

One witness, a McDonald’s employee who was sitting in his car on break, said he saw the men run from the window, jump into a car and speed away toward Harris Teeter, the report states.

The restaurant manager told deputies $382 was stolen, according to the report. The men didn’t try to rob the store or present firearms, said Trent Faris, York County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The manager said it will cost $280 to replace the register.

Trail grants awarded

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board has awarded two implementation grants, totaling $97,175, for community projects along the Carolina Thread Trail.

Implementation grants provide funding to communities to assist with trail corridor planning, land acquisition and construction of trails.

• City of Rock Hill, York County was given $31,000 to be used to prepare construction drawings for a 1.5-mile, 10-foot wide asphalt trail to connect the existing Piedmont Medical Center Trail at Riverwalk to the city’s River Park trails.

• Catawba County was given $66,175 to be used to purchase 21 acres of land along the west side of Lyle Creek and adjacent to the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge. This land acquisition consists of about 8.5 acres of floodplain along the creek and will allow construction of a future parking facility. In addition, it will provide .4 miles of natural surface trail and host a trailhead for The Thread.
