Local history
According to author Hendrik Booraem’s book “Unto This Hill and the Making of Andrew Jackson,” the seventh president of the United States lived and attended school about one mile north of present-day Nanny Mountain Historic Park in the Bethel township of York County.
A marker by the Daughters of the American Revolution still stands at the intersection of highways 49 and 274 (former Five Points location) of the old Bethel Academy where young Andrew received some of his education under the Rev. Robert McCulloch, under the supervision of the Rev. Francis Cummins, pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Some imagination promotes the thought that young Andrew perhaps climbed nearby Nanny Mountain on lazy Sunday afternoons since it was in plain sight of where he lived.
Perhaps he ventured into Col. Hills’ iron ore mine and explored the cave, which would be used later as a site of the Underground Railroad, according to local legend.
Most York County residents are not aware of the historical value of Nanny Mountain and its influence on our modern day events, but a casual walk through its well-maintained trails placed by the York County Historical Department will perhaps render the echo of laughter of a young man whose life produced great influence on our nation’s manifest destiny.

Romney remarks spoke to American outrage
Regarding the Friday editorial, “Romney response ill timed”: What used to be our local paper, locally owned and expressing independent opinions, is now owned by McClatchy Company out of California, which expanded its operations to the east coast with the purchase of The Herald. They are now the third-largest newspaper company in the country.
Their board of directors includes people from the University of California, a past Pulitzer Prize board member and the like. They are in the business of making money, of course, and they use the one-size-fits-all approach that serves the purpose of both reducing costs and promoting the west coast/liberal media mentality. (I add to that one study I’ve read that 88 percent of all media personnel – paper, magazines, TV, etc. – contribute to Democrats.) None of this culture promotes critical thought when it comes to President Obama.
When Mitt Romney “launched his own verbal assault” without waiting for “expert assessments,” I cheered! President Obama’s squishy remarks hours later did not speak to our American outrage. Neither did it come close to instilling fear and trepidation in the murderers and groups that backed them.
Thugs killed four Americans on foreign soil. Our country condemns foreigners when they murder our citizens, or rather, we used to before President Obama. All the liberal boiler-plate editorials across the country shouldn’t distract us from the simple truth.
