A host of changes to Lake Wylie’s annual fall child cancer benefit likely just led to a record haul in helping a local family.
Lake Wylie Children’s Charity, in its first year by that name yet with many volunteers who’ve worked for years, hasn’t yet pinned down its donation total to the dollars and cents. But its ballpark figures are impressing.
“It’s definitely going to be our biggest year ever,” said Jennifer Joye, executive director.
The previous record of a benefit – there’s been one each year for a decade, with money going to an area family facing child cancer – came in 2010 at about $49,000. Last year was a shade under that amount.
“From what we know so far, it looks like this year breaks our record,” said board member Marshall Feimster.
As of Friday there were still donations and expenses “trickling in,” Feimster said. The group will wait until all totals are final before presenting the money raised to Crystal Moore, mom of recipient Luke. Volunteers thank the community for responding to help the local family, by donating auction items and purchasing them, and just by participating.
Plans are to continue events like the golf tournament, lake race and fall concert next year, though organizers may take a little time to themselves before ramping up to help another family.
“My boat feels abandoned,” Joye said.
