The autumn bazaar at River Hills Community Church provides, every other year, a chance for holiday shopping without venturing to the department stores or malls. It’s also a chance for holiday earning.
River Hills residents Lisa Ann Cote and Suzanne Krause are two of the 35 craft vendors participating in the Saturday, Nov. 3, event. Items include pottery, bird feeders, purses, baskets and stained glass. The event also has a silent auction with vacations, football tickets, lawn maintenance and flowers.
Money raised goes to church missions. Money spent, goes into local pockets.
Cote has a couple of shops and an online following for her work with items found from estate sales, auctions, vacations and other locales. Cote takes things others don’t want or wouldn’t know what to do with and creates furniture and artwork.
“I take unwanted furniture, household items, salvaged materials and give it new life,” she said. “It’s all about repurposing.”
Cote is big into reverse glass painting, decorative lampshades, paper mache, bridal scenes - anything she enjoys or believes will sell. Her dad was an antique dealer so creativity for used items is “in my blood,” Cote said. She’s participated in the every-other-year event before and finds it a strong market for her crafts.
“I wish it was every year,” Cote said. “There’s a lot of great people there.”
Krause began playing with dolls as a girl and hasn’t stopped. She collects them, but also accessorizes and sells clothes and other items for the American Girl dolls. For years she had a shop in Fort Mill. Now she sells in Pineville. She’s participated in the past six or so River Hills events.
“It’s always a big crowd,” Krause said. “I’m always pleased with my sales at the end of the day.”
This year, she’ll bring clothing sets, paper dolls, jewelry and a cradle with custom linens. There will be angels, nativities and Christmas themes. Several sets will come with a doll-sized Bible and cross. The grandmother who for years had four boys living just down the street but now has an 18-month-old granddaughter, too, won’t bring the types of gifts people can find in catalogues.
“It’s nice to be able to find something different,” she said.
Some of the local groups that will benefit from the event include Clover Area Assistance Center, PATH, York County Children’s Attention Home, Pilgrim’s Inn and Lighthouse Ministries. The bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the life center gym. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold for $2. There also will be a bake sale. For more information, call 803-831-1615.
