Voters said “yes” Tuesday to expanding beer and wines sales in Lancaster and York counties.
In York County, 64 percent said “yes” to allow Sunday sales of beer and wine at convenience and grocery stores.
In Lancaster County, 58 percent said “yes” to allowing restaurant beer and wine sales on Sundays.
For York County voters, it is the fourth time they have considered such a question. In 2006 on-site Sunday sales of beer and wine at restaurants was approved in Rock Hill. In 2008, on-site Sunday sales of beer and wine at restaurants was approved for the county.
Pam Morrell of the Committee of Citizens & Business for York County has been involved in the local referendum efforts.
“It’s really about choice, and the benefits are economic,” she said. The permit fee is $1,000 per business.
Elissa Boyet, an organizers of the Lancaster effort, said, “It’s good to see the county move forward to the 21st century. This has always been about a choice of where to go.”
Lancaster County organizers said they hoped approval of Sunday sales might bring more restaurant business to the county.
This is the first beer and wine sales referendum to be approved in Lancaster. Boyet said organizers would likely wait at least a couple of years before considering a referendum on Sunday sales at convenience stores and groceries.
The state’s Department of Revenue issues the appropriate sales permits. The permits will be available once the election results are certified, the language of the referendum is reviewed to make sure it meets state standards, and the referendum petition process is reviewed to make sure it had the number of needed signatures and met other election criteria.
