Erickson: Penn State's accreditation warning has been lifted

- Centre Daily Times

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State’s accreditation warning from the Middle States Commission has been lifted, university President Rodney Erickson reported today at the meeting of the board of trustees.

The warning was issued Aug. 8 in the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal.

Erickson said the accreditation commission found that Penn State is in full compliance with the requirements. He called the update “excellent news” during his report to the trustees.

“Their report unequivocally stated that Penn State meets all quality standards for accreditation, and it also acknowledged the university’s resilience, fiscal stability and rapid change in the face of numerous challenges,” Erickson said.

Erickson said evaluators visited Penn State in mid-October, and their report concluded that the commission is “impressed by the degree to which Penn State has risen, as a strong campus community, to the sad events that led to its placement on ‘warning status.’”

Erickson said the university’s efforts to increase awareness of child abuse and sexual assault as well as creating compliance positions were also noted in the commission’s report.
