Madison Tepfenhart, a talented senior catcher for the Clover High School softball team, has signed on the dotted line to play softball for the Newberry College Bulldogs.
Tepfenhart made it official during a recognition ceremony in the CHS media center. Family, coaches and other well-wishers were in attendance.
Tepfenhart, who began playing competitive softball at the Clover Recreation Department at the age of 10, will tell you she is ready to take her game to the next level.
Decked out in a Newberry College team shirt, Tepfenhart assured those in attendance she has the mindset it takes to compete in Blue Eagle country this season and beyond.
“I am excited about playing softball at Newberry next season,” she said. “There will be a lot of players competing for positions.”
Tepfenhart likes the small college atmosphere at Newberry, where she plans to major in nursing.
“It’s a neat atmosphere where everybody knows everybody,” said Tepfenhart, the daughter of Ann and Mike Tepfenhart. “It’s a quiet campus with plenty of time to devote to athletics and academics.”
While Tepfenhart is excited about her future with the Newberry team, she looks forward to her final season with the two-time defending region champion Lady Blue Eagles in the spring.
“We lost only one senior last year and won the Region 3-AAAA championship the last two years,” she said.
Lady Blue Eagle head softball coach Shea Hall, who has built a solid program at CHS, speaks in glowing terms of her prized catcher.
“Madison is a very special player,” said Hall. “She’s made all-region and all-state and represents our team well.”
Added Hall in lauding Tepfenhart’s contributions to the CHS program, “We will miss Madison when she graduates and glad she will be with us this spring. She is ready to play at the next level.”
Bailey Jackson, assistant athletic director at CHS, echoed Hall’s sentiments in expressing his appreciation to the gritty competitor.
“Madison’s in her fifth year in the program,” Jackson said to the assembled guests. “She’s been a great representative for Clover High School and will do the same for Newberry College.”
Tepfenhart said she will miss her playing days at CHS when the coming season ends.
“I appreciate all of the help I receive from my teammates and from coach Hall,” she said. “Coach Hall has built a winning program at Clover High.”
Tepfenhart’s advice to Clover area youngsters aspiring to play high school softball someday: “Always remember to put academics first, practice a lot and stay with it.”
