The Oakridge Middle School wrestling team took to the mat Nov. 27 for their first meet of the season against conference foe Castle Heights. The meet came down to the final match, where , the Golden Eagles fell just short. OMS won six of the 13 matches wrestled with pins, but still lost 48-36.
Winning for OMS were Brent Courtwright, Austin Oldenburg, William Emory, Wyatt Emory, Hunter Vowell and Timmy Parker, each with pins. The Golden Eagles also wrestled well in the preliminary matches with Bent Prikker and Eric Probert securing wins, and Michael Appello wrestling strong as well.
Basketball
• The eighth-grade girls basketball team beat Fort Mill Nov. 29 in dominating fashion 33-4. The Lady Eagles played outstanding defense throughout the entire game shutting out Fort Mill in three of four quarters. Leading the way for Oakridge were: Taylor Morneault, 15 points, 6 steals; Lilly Wallace, 10 points, 10 rebounds; Tiffany Mendez, 4 points, 4 steals; Joelle Keffer, 2 points, 7 rebounds; and Madison Bryant, 2 points, 3 rebounds.
• The eighth-grade boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker last night in double overtime to Fort Mill with a final score of 48-43. The Golden Eagles dominated the first half of the game leading at halftime 21-14. Fort Mill changed up their game plan in the second half and was able to get within one score at the end of regulation. Down by three with four seconds remaining, the Yellow Jackets inbounded the ball and nailed a three-pointer as time expired.Free throws and turnovers ended up being the difference between winning and losing. Stats for the Golden Eagles include: Cole Hybargar, 17 points, 9 rebounds; Wally Wilmore, 17 points, 4 steals; Joe Glover, 6 points, 7 rebounds; Wade Summer, 6 rebounds, 2 steals; Matt Ringler, 4 rebounds, 1 steal; and Parker Largen, 3 points.
• The seventh-grade girls basketball team won their first game of the season on Nov. 29, defeating the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets 22-20. The team got down 6-0 early, but countered with a 10-0 run and were able to hang on at the end. Scoring for the team were Amber Lipscomb with 10, Madison Lybrand with 8, and Kendra Hickman and Brooklyn Thomas with 2 each. Katie Elder, Kendra Hickman, Madison Lybrand, Brooklyn Thomas, Megan Hanson and Brenna Allen all had multiple rebounds for the team. The team played great defense all night and accumulated 14 steals on the night led by Amber Lipscomb with 6. Sarah Archer, Madison Lybrand, Jackie Van Slambrook, Brooklyn Thomas and Sydney Beatham also added steals.
• On Nov. 29, the OMS seventh-grade boys lost 31-23. The Golden Eagles fought hard but just could not get their shots to fall. The team was led by Andrew White with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 6 steals. Kendal Strout added 7 points and Austin Gunnels added 1 point.
