LAKE WYLIE Caira Moore, 8, daughter of Claudia and Charles Moore of Lake Wylie and a student at Crowders Creek Elementary School, will participate in the Dec. 16 Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Charlotte/Greensboro pageant competition.
The Miss Jr. Pre-Teen division is one of four divisions for girls ages 7 to 9, who compete in modeling routines, which include casual and formal wear. Girls also are judged on personality and interviewing skills.
The winners move on to an all-expense paid trip to the national competition in Orlando, Fla. Winners receive more than $30,000 in prizes and awards.

CAAC seeks holiday meal donations
CLOVER Clover Area Assistance Center is collecting food for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals through Dec. 13.
Items wanted include turkeys, hams, stuffing, gravy mix, gelatin, pie crust, canned yams, potatoes, cranberries, pie filling and fruit. Disposable roasting pans also are requested.

Pancake breakfast with Santa Dec. 15
LAKE WYLIE The River Hills Lions Club’s annual Pancake Breakfast with Santa Claus will be served from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Dec. 15 at Camp Thunderbird.
Cost is $10 per child and $5 per adult, and includes pancake breakfast, pony rides, face painting, bounce houses and a picture with Santa Claus.

Tess Mowczan was seriously injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Nov. 30. She remains a patient at Carolinas Medical Center.

Humane Society of Charlotte wins $20,000
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced that Humane Society of Charlotte in Charlotte has won the Southeast division and $20,000 in the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.
In August, September and October, the shelter adopted or reunited 1,101 pets with their owners, an increase of 549 lives saved over the same period last year.
The shelter won an additional $5,000 for increasing lives saved by more than 300.
“The shelter that first described itself as ‘small but mighty’ back in August has shown us how mighty it really is,” said Bert Troughton, vice president of community outreach for the ASPCA.
Tree auction benefit Dec. 20

Donate food to pay library fine
YORK COUNTY The annual Food for Fines program runs through Dec. 31 at all York County libraries.
Library users may pay off fines for overdue materials with nonperishable food and personal hygiene items. For each donated item, $1 will be credited to outstanding fines only, but will not cover the cost of lost or damaged materials.
All types of nonperishable food items, toiletries and disposable diapers will be collected. Items collected will be donated to York County food banks.

Help with heat available
Carolina Community Actions Inc. is offering low-income families additional assistance with heating bills, water, mortgage and rent.
CCA also administers a family assessment program to assist with obtaining employment, license for Certified Nursing Assistant, supplies, General Education Degree and child care.
Applications for emergency heating (bills with cut-off notice), HVAC units, rent and mortgage assistance will be taken Mondays through Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. at the Apple West Center, 546 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC. Assistance may be provided up to $1,000.
Applications for non-emergency heating assistance will be taken at the following locations throughout York County. Assistance may be provided up to $750.
