Friends and colleagues who know Lee McClellan, the York police officer seriously injured two weeks ago when a boat fell on him, plan to use barbecue, baked beans, bank funds and bow hunting to help curb the impact of medical bills just in time for Christmas.
Ever since the accident, support from the community has been nonstop.
Two days after McClellan was hospitalized, York Police set up a bank account at South Carolina Bank and Trust, while creating a donation page on Rally.org.
On Saturday, the community will hold a fundraiser at the Fraternal Order of Police building on West Main Street in Rock Hill, offering donors plates of barbecue, baked beans, potato salad and rolls for $7.
On Dec. 22, Rock Hill’s Southern Draw Archery Club and Robin Hood Archery range on Homestead Road will let people pay at least $10 to shoot 3D structures shaped like wild animals in a tournament.
“You don’t have to be around Lee long to realize what kind of person he is,” said Doug Williams, co-owner and operator of the Southern Draw Archery Club, where McClellan shopped frequently. “The thought came to a lot of us: How can we help? What can we do? Being out of work, with medical bills, there’s going to be a need there.”
Not only will the tournament raise money for the family, but so will a simultaneous silent auction, which has already attracted local businesses to become sponsors or donate items and services.
All these fundraisers have something in common: Every cent raised goes to the McClellan family.
“It’s just been overwhelming,” Lee McClellan’s father, Dale, said about the amount of community support he and his family have received since the accident. “It makes me feel so humble.”
