Oakridge Middle School wrestlers beat Fort Mill; basketball teams on upswing against Clover, Gold Hill

Wrestling

• The Oakridge Middle School wrestling team turned in a strong performance Dec. 11, defeating Fort Mill 53-27. In a competitive match, the Golden Eagles won 7 of 12 matches wrestled, collecting pins in six. Two key matches were Austin Johnson’s pin at 119 and Philip Rector’s pin at 167. The two tightest matches of the night were Brent Courtwright and Austin Oldenburg. Congratulations to the following on their wins: Austin Oldenburg, technical decision; Austin Johnson, pin; William Emory, pin; Wyatt Emory, pin; Hunter Vowell, pin; Timmy Parker, pin; Philip Rector, pin; and Clint Jenkins and Cole Woodworth collected forfeits for the Golden Eagles.

Basketball

• The eighth-grade girls beat cross-town rival Clover Dec. 13. The Lady Golden Eagles were jump started on offense in the first quarter by Taylor Morneault with 6 points in the quarter and Chloe Crank adding 4 points. OMS extended their lead to 21-5 at the half. Leading the way were Kaidyn Nadolny with 4 points and Joelle Keffer with 6 points. The outstanding play from the Lady Golden Eagles continued throughout the second half, with Oakridge finishing off Clover with a final score of 35-15. Leading scorers for Oakridge were: Taylor Morneault, 16 points; Joelle Keffer, 7 points; Chloe Crank, 6 points; Kaidyn Nadolny, 4 points; and Tiffany Mendez, 2 points.

• The seventh-grade OMS boys’ basketball team beat Clover 51-14 on Dec. 13. Every player scored at least two points. The team racked up 20 steals and only gave up 2 second half points. Andrew White led the team with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Austin Gunnels added 8 points and 3 steals. Rest of the stats: Jackson Watkins, 2 points, 3 steals; Luke Darling, 3 points, 2 steals; David Saleeba, 4 points, 2 steals; Colby Ratliff, 2 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds; Kendall Strout, 6 points, 3 rebounds; Donovan Olivieri, 5 points, 2 steals; Will Griffith, 2 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds; and Hunter Walden, 4 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds.

• On Dec. 13, the eighth-grade boys defeated a tough Clover team with a final score of 29-17. Parker Largen knocked down two three-pointers in the first quarter. OMS was up 12 to 9 after the first. It was back and forth for the second and third quarters, but Oakridge had the lead 18 to 14 going into the fourth quarter. With two minutes remaining, it was still a tight game, but the Golden Eagles were able to get to the basket and eventually put the game out of reach. Scoring for the Golden Eagles: Parker Largen, 8 points, 2 rebounds; Cole Hybargar, 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals; Wally Wilmore, 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals; Joe Glover, 4 points, 5 rebounds; Wade Summer, 2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals; and Matt Ringler, 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals.

• On Dec. 10, the seventh-grade OMS boys won 56-28 at home against Gold Hill. Every player contributed to the win with nine players scoring points. Andrew White led the Golden Eagles with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Luke Darling sparked the team with hustle on defense and added 8 points and 4 steals off the bench. Donovan Olivieri provided instant offense with 6 points and 3 rebounds. Other contributors were: Jackson Watkins, 2 points; David Saleeba, 4 points; Austin Gunnels, 4 points; Kendall Strout, 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals; Will Griffith, 2 point, 4 rebounds, 3 steals; Hunter Walden, 2 points; and Colby Ratliff, 3 rebounds.

• On Dec. 10, the eighth-grade boys defeated the Gold Hill Bulldogs 56-34. All 11 players had substantial playing time, and eight of the players scored. Oakridge turned defense into offense, outscoring Gold Hill 20 to 2 in the opening period. The Golden Eagles played tough defense throughout, recording 21 steals. Scoring for the Golden Eagles were: Cole Hybargar, 14 points, 8 rebounds; Wally Wilmore, 12 points, 3 steals,; Ashanti Long, 10 points, 4 steals; Tanner Tolson, 8 points, 4 steals; Parker Largen, 4 points, 3 steals; Wade Summer, 4 points, 2 rebounds; Jay Largen, 2 points, 3 steals; Matt Ringler, 2 points, 2 rebounds; and Josh Chappel, 3 rebounds, 1 steal.

• The seventh-grade girls continued to struggle in the first half Dec. 10, as they fell to Gold Hill 21-12. The team started the game shooting 0 for 14 and just couldn’t make up all the points. The team played great defense, holding the leading scorer in the conference to 2 points on the night. Scoring for the Golden Eagles were Amber Lipscomb, Madison Lybrand, Brooklyn Thomas, Megan Hansen and Sydney Beatham. The team dominated the much taller Gold Hill team on the boards holding a 16 to 8 advantage. Amber Lipscomb, Sarah Archer, Anna Transou, Kendra Hickman, Madison Lybrand, and Brooklyn Thomas all had multiple rebounds. Jackie Van Slambrook and Krystal Nielson contributed with steals.
