Clover High 2008 grad graduates Army basics
Army Pvt. Jeremiah Driscoll graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.
During the nine weeks of training, he studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Driscoll is the son of Daniel Driscoll of Lake Wylie Road. He is a 2008 graduate of Clover High School.
Sheriff receives Golden Eagle Award
The Boy Scouts of America, Palmetto Council honored Sheriff Bruce Bryant with the Golden Eagle Award on Dec. 6 during the Friends of Scouting Golden Eagle Dinner for his contributions and support of Scouting in York County.
“Boy Scouts was very, very important to me growing up, and still is. I appreciate being honored with the Golden Eagle Award,” Bryant said. “We all should to teach our children the rules and values to live by that are learned through Scouting.”
The York County Sheriff’s Office Explorers Post No. 1786 also is affiliated with Boy Scouts of America. The co-ed program is designed to attract well-qualified young men and women to participate in organized on-the-job-training that could help prepare them for a career in law enforcement or related field.
In York County, there are five Cub Scout Packs, eight Boy Scout Troops.

Tree auction benefit Thursday
ROCK HILL HarborChase Festival of Trees Auction will be held 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at 1611 Constitution Blvd.
More than 25 decorated live Fraser Fir trees decorated by local businesses will be auctioned to benefit the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Library holiday closings posted
All York County libraries will be closed Dec. 22-26 for the Christmas holiday. Libraries also will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and remain closed Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.
Donate food to pay library fine
YORK COUNTY The annual Food for Fines program runs through Dec. 31 at all York County libraries.
Library users may pay off fines for overdue materials with nonperishable food and personal hygiene items. For each donated item, $1 will be credited to outstanding fines only, but will not cover the cost of lost or damaged materials.
All types of nonperishable food items, toiletries and disposable diapers will be collected. Items collected will be donated to York County food banks.
Library patrons are encouraged to participate even if they have no outstanding library fines.

Help with heat available
Carolina Community Actions Inc. is offering low-income families additional assistance with heating bills, water, mortgage and rent.
CCA also administers a family assessment program to assist with obtaining employment, license for Certified Nursing Assistant, supplies, General Education Degree and child care.
CCA’s Low-Income Home Energy and General Emergency assistance programs assist eligible households twice a year with benefits up to $1,000. Qualification is based on total gross household income during the past 30 days.
Applications for emergency heating (bills with cut-off notice), HVAC units, rent and mortgage assistance will be taken Mondays through Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. at the Apple West Center, 546 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC. Assistance may be provided up to $1,000.
Applications for non-emergency heating assistance will be taken at the following locations throughout York County. Assistance may be provided up to $750.

Humane Society Christmas shop open
FORT MILL The annual Humane Society of York County Christmas shop, run by volunteers, is open at 725 Stockbridge Commons.
The shop sells Christmas decorations and gifts, including many hand-crafted items, at low prices.
