Charlotte librarian wins national award
NEW YORK, N.Y. --
Beatriz Adrianna Guevara of the Charlotte (N.C.) Mecklenburg Library was named as one of 10 librarians recognized for service to their communities, schools and campuses as winners of the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award.
The award encouraged members of the public to nominate their librarians in public, school and college, community college and university libraries for the difference they make in their communities.
Guevara was praised as a role model to Latino youth in her community, lending expertise and mentorship to Charlotte’s young adults.
“I have never met anyone else who works harder than she does at taking the library outside of its four walls and into the community,” said her nominator. “Winning this award will be a small way we can say ‘thank you’ or, rather, ‘gracias,’ for everything she has done for us.”
More than 1,500 library patrons nationwide nominated a librarian. The nine other award recipients are:

Julie Hatsell Wales McNair Magnet School Rockledge, Fla.
Each receives a $5,000 cash award and will be honored at a ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times, on Dec. 18. Robert K. Massie, winner of the 2012 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, for his work, “Catherine the Great, Portrait of a Woman” will make remarks at the ceremony.
Nominations were open to librarians working in public, school, college, community college and university libraries. Fifty librarians nationwide have won the I Love My Librarian award since 2008. More information about the award recipients is available at www.atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian.
