LAKE WYLIE John Tabor will present “Six Days Above the Clouds” during the Jan. 8 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at noon at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane.
Tabor, a member of the Charlotte Rotary Club, documented his trip Sept. 10-15 with 30 Rotarians from District 7680 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb was an effort to raise awareness and money for Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign. It is estimated more than $100,000 was raised to eradicate polio as a result of each climber’s contributions and efforts to secure sponsors.
Guests are welcome. Lunch, catered by Christopher’s, costs $9. For more information, visit lwrotaryclub.org.
On Jan. 15, Buz McKim, NASCAR artist and historian for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, will speak to the club.
McKim, from Hackensack, N.J., has a father who competed on northeastern NASCAR race tracks in the 1950s. McKim attempted a driving career in high school, but found it more profitable to paint pictures of the cars.
His artwork was included in mid-1970s Indianapolis 500 yearbooks. He also designed many NASCAR race car paint schemes during the 1970s including several Daytona 500 winners.
His television work includes the ESPN series “Ultimate NASCAR,” two award-winning productions for the Speed channel and biographies of NASCAR Hall of Fame members Bill France Sr. and Bud Moore, and most recently, an episode of “American Pickers.” He was also co-host of the weekly radio show, “NASCAR Collector,” on Sirius Satellite Radio for several seasons.
McKim lives in Rock Hill with his wife, Gwen. They have two daughters and five granddaughters.
