LAKE WYLIE --
On Dec. 3, a new arrival at Lake Wylie Assisted Living brought not another new resident, but someone set to serve all of them.
New executive director Kristi McCuin is originally from New York, but she’s been in Rock Hill the past 11 years. She has almost 15 years in senior care.
She previously worked as regional director and executive director with other companies, at times travelling up to four or five days a week. Now she’ll provide for the Lake Wylie center what she’ll get a little more of in her life, she hopes – stability.
“They need the stability of an executive director,” McCuin said.
The staff of about 50 people remains largely intact, from the nurse to dining services. The facility has close to 100 residents, near capacity. A key for McCuin is quickly learning names and backgrounds of residents, something she’s working through steadily.
“What you enjoy most is hearing all the stories from our residents, their lives, their histories,” she said.
Even as she’s home more now, and able to spend more time with her husband and three sons, McCuin’s first weeks in Lake Wylie haven’t been particularly calm. There’s been a staff Christmas party, resident family Christmas party, Chamber of Commerce event and several out-of-state moves.
Yet she’s not exactly hoping for calm in the new year.
“I hope it doesn’t get calmer,” McCuin said. “I like the excitement. I like the hectic stuff.”
What McCuin expects to remain from how the facility ran before she arrived is the sense of comfort families have being in the facility, or having their loved ones there.
“It’s loving the residents and being with the residents,” she said. “You can feel that coming here.”
