LAKE WYLIE Buz McKim, NASCAR artist and historian for the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, will speak Jan. 15 at the Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at noon at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane.
McKim’s father competed on northeastern NASCAR race tracks in the 1950s. McKim attempted a driving career in high school, but found it more profitable to paint pictures of the cars instead.
His artwork was included in mid-1970s Indianapolis 500 yearbooks. He also designed many NASCAR race car paint schemes during the 1970s including several Daytona 500 winners. He later developed a line of limited-edition art prints featuring NASCAR legends Richard Petty, Mark Martin and Fireball Roberts.
McKim wrote for the monthly publication “Racing Milestones” for nine years and has added his expertise to nearly 100 books, including the best-selling “NASCAR Vault” and its companion publication, “NASCAR Families.”
His television work includes the ESPN series “Ultimate NASCAR,” two award-winning productions for the Speed channel and biographies of NASCAR Hall of Fame members Bill France Sr. and Bud Moore, and most recently, an episode of “American Pickers.” He was also co-host of the weekly radio show, “NASCAR Collector,” on Sirius Satellite Radio for several seasons.
Guests are welcome. Lunch, catered by Christopher’s, costs $9. For more information, visit lwrotaryclub.org.
