Oakridge Middle basketball teams on roll

• The OMS seventh-grade girls basketball team won an exciting overtime battle with rival York on Jan. 14 by a score of 17-14. The team continued to struggle in the first half and trailed midway through the second quarter 10-1. The team came storming back allowing only 4 points over the last 2 ½ quarters and overtime by playing incredible defense and outrebounding York’s 6-foot, 4-inch center. The scoring was evenly distributed as Madison Lybrand, Brenna Allen and Sydney Beatham each had 4 points. Brooklyn Thomas and Amber Lipscomb each added 2, while Kendra Hickman scored a free throw. • The OMS eighth-grade girls basketball team on Jan. 14 beat an undefeated York, 19-14. Taylor Morneault ran the offense well from the point tallying four assists on the night. Meanwhile, Lilly Wallace commanded the backboards grabbing a season high 18 rebounds. This win was a total team effort with all of the Lady Eagles boxing out well and playing lights out on the defensive end. Contributing for Oakridge were: Lilly Wallace - 9 points, 18 rebounds; Taylor Morneault - 5 points, 4 assists; Joelle Keffer - 2 points, 5 rebounds; Tiffany Mendez - 2 points, 3 steals; and Erika Drutis - 1 point, 2 steals.

• The OMS seventh-grade boys basketball team won 35-30 on Jan. 14 vs. York.The team was led by Andrew White with 19 points, 22 rebounds and 4 assists. Austin Gunnels had 7 points and 3 steals, and Will Griffith added 8 rebounds. Others contributing were: Jackson Watkins - 2 points; Luke Darling - 1 point; David Saleeba - 2 points; Colbl Ratliff - 2 points; and Hunter Walden- 2 points

• On Jan. 14, Oakridge kept the ball rolling with their eighth straight win, this time over their rivals from York. After three quarters, the score was Oakridge 31, York 11. Oakridge continued tough defensive play, but York caught fire making five 3-pointers in the final period. The Golden Eagles stayed composed, eventually winning the game with a final score of 37-30. Scoring for the Golden Eagles: Wally Wilmore - 11 points, 4 rebounds; Parker Largen - 9 points, 3 steals; Cole Hybargar - 6 points, 12 rebounds (8 offensive); Ashanti Long - 4 points; Matt Ringler - 3 points; J oe Glover - 2 points, 2 steals; Tanner Tolson - 2 points; and Wade Summer - 3 rebounds, 2 steals.

Wrestling

• Oakridge Middle School wrestlers turned in a strong performance in the Yellow Jacket tournament Jan. 12. Five wrestlers medaled in the tournament, including Austin Oldenburg, second place silver medal, 3-1, state qualifier; William Emory, first place gold medal, 4-0, state qualifier; Wyatt Emory, second place silver medal, 3-1, state qualifier; Timmy Parker, first place gold medal, 4-0, state qualifier; and Cole Woodworth, third place bronze medal, 4-1. Also wrestling well were: Michael Angelou 2-2, Gavin Colocino 2-2, Austin Malcolm 2-2 and Hunter Vowell 3-2.

• OMS dropped a hard-fought match to the defending state champions Dutchman Creek Middle School on Jan. 15, 39-36. The meet went to the final match before it was decided. Congratulations to the following wrestlers for their strong performance: Brent Courtwright, Austin Oldenburg – decision, Charlie Hoffman, Austin Malcolm – pin, William Emory – pin, Wyatt Emory – pin, Hunter Vowell – pin, Timmy Parker – pin, and Leander Dixon – decision.
