LAKE WYLIE Clover School District Superintendent Dr. Marc Sosne will be the featured speaker at the Lake Wylie Rotary Club’s noon meeting Feb. 5 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane.
Sosne will present an informational presentation about the proposed spring 2014 bond referendum.
The Clover school board gave unanimous approval last week to an $85 million construction package for a 2014 bond referendum that includes a new elementary and middle school, building renovations at Clover Middle to create a ninth-grade academy and athletic field improvements.
Voters would be asked to approve borrowing “about $60 million” for the plans, according to Sosne, and the district would make a down payment of about $25 million. Under the plans, the new schools would open in the fall 2017.

An 11:30 a.m. social will be followed by lunch at noon and speaker at 12:30 p.m.

Optimists launch oratorical contest
CLOVER The Clover Optimist Club is seeking applicants for its oratorical scholarship program, which will be 10 a.m. April 13 at the Clover club. The topic is “Why my voice is important.”
The speech contest is open to any student younger than age 19 by Dec. 31 and has not graduated from high school or the equivalent may enter. Interested students may pick up an application from the Clover High School counselors or from the Clover Optimist Club.
Entrants must submit a speech on this pre-assigned topic. T
here are three levels to the contest. Club winners, including two boys and two girls, will advance to the second level, the zone contest at 10 a.m. April 27 at the club.
One boy and one girl will advance to the third level, the district contest at 10 a.m. May 11 in Columbia. Two winners, one boy and one girl, will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.
Entrants need to fill out an application, submit a copy of their speech and provide a copy of their birth certificate.
