Sheriff’s deputy, York officer receive SC Medal of Valor
A York County Sheriff’s Office deputy and York Police officer were recently honored for their actions during a 2011 crime spree resulting in the death of a gunman.
Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Blevins and York Lance Cpl. Brian Kimble were awarded the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association Medal of Valor last week, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the sheriff’s office.
On Sept. 14, 2011, York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 officers were called to assist York Police Department to track down a suspect responsible for two burglaries from businesses in York. During the search, the suspect fired a pistol at the K-9 officers.
The suspect, identified as Larry Adams, was later found in an area on McClain Street in York.
Blevins and Kimble responded to the location. Despite several warnings to put his weapon down, Adams started firing his pistol at both officers. Both Blevins and Kimble returned fire and Adams died.
Many homes and a school had to be evacuated during the hours-long chase before Adams’ death. No officers were hurt.
The Medal of Valor was awarded to Blevins and Kimble for their “prudent and honorable actions of protecting each other and the immediate public from danger,” the release states.
“The actions and valor of Lt. Blevins and LCpl. Kimble ended a serious crime spree, restoring order to the community,” the release states.
Adams had been a fugitive from the state probation department for almost six months, according to state officials. Adams has arrests dating back to age 17, and was in prison twice and paroled twice including on burglary, drug and assault charges.
