Lake Wylie baseball evaluations Feb. 9

Registration for Lake Wylie Athletic Association’s spring baseball season is under way for all players ages 4 to13.

LWAA will be holding evaluations Feb. 9 and Feb. 16 at Bethel Elementary School’s baseball fields. Evaluations will begin at 10 a.m. Evaluations are required for all players league age 8 and older who were not on a LWAA major league team last spring.

The Belmont Parks & Recreation Department is holding registration for youth baseball for ages 6-14 through Saturday, Feb. 9. The registration fee costs $40 in city, $65 out of city.

Hall of fame

York County names Class of 2013

The York County Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its 13th induction ceremony with the announcement of the Class of 2013 on May 14 at the Events at Manchester, 1965 Cinema Drive.

Six inductees will join the York County Sports Hall of Fame this year.

• Ron Davis: three-time state tennis champion at Rock Hill High School. Davis was a seven-time singles USTA champion and a five-time doubles champion. Davis was the No. 1 player at Winthrop University.

• Ivory Latta: basketball star at York Comprehensive High School and the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Latta currently plays in the WMBA; once scored 70 points in a game.

• Marty Long: All-State athlete in football and track at Northwestern High School. Long played football at the Citadel from 1982-’86. He was the football coach at University of Arizona and is currently the football coach at the University of Northern Illinois.

• Hugh Mauldin: All-State athlete in football and track. Mauldin played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He attended college at Clemson University and made the All-ACC team. Mauldin led the ACC in rushing and in punt returns.

• Jimmy Wallace: All-State athlete in football and track. While playing football for York High School, he led his team to an undefeated season. Later, Wallace coached at York High School. He also coached at Rock Hill High School and Wofford College.

• Willie Ware: tennis coach at Fort Mill High School. Ware’s team has won five consecutive state championships and 15 regional championships. Ware has been named the State Coach of the Year four times.
