York Sheriff, US Marshals make compliance checks on 347 sex offenders

YORK COUNTY --

The York County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshal’s task force recently verified the addresses of registered sex offenders in York County.

On Jan. 28, during a three day operation called “Operation SOCS or Sex Offender Compliance Sweep," sheriff’s deputies, SLED agents and US Marshals Operation Intercept Fugitive Task Force went door to door of registered sex offenders to verify the addresses and other information that sex offenders are required to provide by law.

The sex offender compliance check is part of the South Carolina sex offender law, to perform at least once a year, an on site verification of addresses of each sex offender in state counties. It is at the sheriff’s discretion as to when the checks are to be performed. A sex offender must register with in three business days of an address change.

“This should give the people of the community an assurance that the Sheriff’s Office is getting ahead of the sex offender registry, they are not waiting for something to happen,” said Kelvin Washington US Marshal for the District of South Carolina.

Out of the 347 active registered sex offenders in York County, 340 were accounted for in person. The remaining seven individuals whose information could not be verified, warrants for their arrest will be issued and those individuals are being actively pursued.

“The most innocent of the innocent are usually the victims in sex offender cases,” said Sheriff Bruce Bryant. “We will hold all sex offenders accountable for their actions, and we do our best to keep those offenders from harming anyone else in our county.”

The York County Sheriff’s Office was the first agency in South Carolina to implement “Offender Watch," an online program that increases awareness of citizens and schools regarding registered sex offenders living in the area.

Officials did not release the names of the seven offenders in violation.
