For the fourth consecutive year, Crowders Creek Elementary School has students selected to participate in the South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir in Charleston. Out of 480 fourth- through sixth-grade students to audition from across the state, only 220 were selected with a composite score of at least 43 out of 44 points.
The students selected from Crowders Creek were fifth-graders Claas Prikker, Seth Young and Joi Vercellono, as well as fourth-grader Nolan Cathers.
The All State Chorus students traveled to Charleston with their parents in early February to attend an intensive three-day choral workshop with world renowned choral composer/conductor Dr. Rollo Dilworth, who is an associate professor of choral music education at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education, he conducts the University Chorale. He is an oft-published composer of choral music, with emphasis in the areas of spirituals and gospel-inspired works.
During their workshop with Dr. Dilworth, the honor choir rehearsed and performed a variety of selections in several languages and musical styles, including Vivaldi’s “Et Exultavit”, and the civil rights spiritual, “I Woke Up This Morning, “ arranged by Dr. Dilworth. The students began each day by 8 a.m., and rehearsals continued until late in the evening. They received intensive training in choral diction and tonal placement. At the end of the workshop, the students were featured in a performance at the Charleston Convention Center, with their families and special guests in attendance.
Principal Millicent Dickey said, “Being able to attend the S.C. All State Chorus is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children. It is an early opportunity for them to cement their love for music.”
The students performed during the Feb. 25 Clover School District Board of Trustees meeting.
