Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden photo contest winners announced

BELMONT -- 

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden announces winners of its ninth annual 2012 Shutterbug Photography Contest. More than 250 amateur photographers submitted their favorite pictures of the garden for judging.

The judges for this year’s contest were Rick Haithcox of Haithcox Photography, Mike Hensdill of The Gaston Gazette and Peter Zay of Zayphoto.com. Things Remembered Custom Framing ... And So Much More of Gastonia sponsored the contest, and provided the matting and frames for the winning entries.

The winning photos are on display through Monday, March 18.

The winners in each category are:

• Best of Show: Rebecca Thomas of Charlotte (first place in orchids category)

Adult Categories

• Architecture /Artwork in the Garden: first, James Taft of Charlotte; second, Lakeisha Jackson of Charlotte; and third, Rebecca Thomas of Charlotte.

• Events/Celebrations: first, Paul Hancharik of Fort Mill; second, Gerry L. King of Rock Hill; third, Edgar Payne of Gastonia.

• Orchids: first, Rebecca Thomas of Charlotte; second, Ken Barrett of Charlotte; third, Gerry L. King of Rock Hill.

• People: first, Edgar Payne of Gastonia; second, Lisa C. Ulery of Charlotte; and third, Ellen Devenny of Kings Mountain, N.C.

• Plants: first, Ann Larsen of Denver, N.C.; second, Joshua Steinke of Charlotte; third, Edgar Payne of Gastonia.

• Water: first, Ken Barrett of Charlotte; second, Edgar Payne of Gastonia; third, Ellen Devenny of Kings Mountain.

• Wildlife: first, Larry Hale of Charlotte; second, Matt Nichols of Mount Holly, N.C.; third, Ivan Zharykau of Pineville, N.C.

Youth Categories

• Architecture /Artwork in the Garden: first, Alexis Nichole Gowlis of Fort Mill.

• Orchids: first, Brenne Frost of Charlotte; second, Aparna Balakrishnan of Charlotte; third, Alexis Nichole Gowlis of Fort Mill.

• Wildlife: first, Joy C. Cassidy of Rock Hill; second, Lillian Thomas of Lake Wylie.

• Plants: first, Alexis Nichole Gowlis of Fort Mill.

• Water: first, Alexis Nichole Gowlis of Fort Mill.
