Council: New SC animal shelter rules not good for York Co.
YORK --
York County Council voiced opposition to a bill in the state General Assembly calling for new regulations on animal shelters.
Council members passed a resolution saying the legislation proposed in the state Senate and House is “not in the best interest” of York County.
Veterinarians around the state say that animal shelters are providing care for animals without proper regulation and that new requirements are necessary to protect private veterinary practices.
Some animal rescue groups and shelters say the new regulations would probably shut many of their organizations down.
The legislation would, among other requirements, mandate that shelters fall under the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and require that shelters only provide some animal care services for prospective pet owners who classify as low-income.
