Markolf Memorial Golf Classic April 19 in Lake Wylie

April 7, 2013

The Bill Markolf Memorial Lake Wylie Golf Classic to benefit Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville will be held April 19 at River Hills Country Club.

Markolf, who died in 2010, was committed to tournament for the Shriners Hospital. This year, the event also will recognize the life and support of Frank Shields, a longtime tournament organizer and supporter, and a former Shriners Hospital patient in his youth. Shields died in March.

“I think Bill would be gratified at how this event has progressed into an annual tradition. Over the years, Frank, along with our many volunteers, have embraced the enthusiasm and commitment that Bill brought to the event on behalf of the children,” said Alex Covington, 2013 Lake Wylie Classic event chair.

As one of 20 Shriners Hospitals in the U.S. devoted exclusively to the care of children, the Greenville hospital specializes in orthopedic treatment. Other facilities focus specifically on burn care, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate treatment. All children are cared for free of charge.

The cost to play in the Bill Markolf Memorial Lake Wylie Golf Classic is $500 per foursome.

An opening reception and live auction will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 18 at T-Bones on the Lake. The cover charge is $20 and is free to registered tournament golfers. Tournament and sponsorship information is available by calling 980-721-5644.
