Friends in Business meeting May 1 in Steele Creek

Friends in Business of Lake Wylie is a local specialty-business networking group that welcomes visitors.

The Lake Wylie Friends in Business will meet at the Grid Iron in Steele Creek at 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 1.

Pilot staff work awarded

Lake Wylie Pilot won six South Carolina Press Association awards, including a first place to reporter John Marks for his article series on the Lake Wylie Children’s Charity.

Marks also won second place for humor column writing and third for public service for weekly newspapers for the charity series.

Pilot editor Catherine Muccigrosso won second place for general news photo and third place for feature photo. The Pilot also won feature specialty publication or magazine for Gateway to the Carolinas newcomer’s guide.

Golf tourney sponsorships available

Sponsorships are available for the Family Trust Federal Credit Union’s fourth annual Charity Golf Tournament for the Children’s Attention Home, the Palmetto School at the Children’s Attention Home Charter School, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of York County.

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. May 21 at the Tega Cay Golf Club on Molokai Drive.

Sponsor levels range from $1,000 to $5,000 and include registration for four. Hole sponsorships start at $100. The deadline is Friday, May 3.

Entry fee is $400 per team and includes carts, green fees, beverages and lunch.

The Children’s Attention Home was established in 1970 and provides emergency residential shelter and support services for abused, neglected, and abandoned children from birth through 21 years. The charter school is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade who live at the home.

The Boys & Girls Clubs provides after-school programs in Rock Hill and Fort Mill and camps during the summer and spring break.

Senior Expo May 7 in York

The 2013 Western York County Senior Expo for all seniors, caregivers and healthcare professionals is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon May 7 at Filbert Presbyterian Church, U.S. 321.

Admission is free, and there will be door prizes, food, beverages, entertainment health screenings and health services information.

York Electric’s meeting May 11

York Electric Cooperative Inc. will hold its 72nd annual meeting May 11 at 1385 E. Alexander Love Hwy.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with entertainment by Carolina Rhythm from 9 to 11:45 a.m. The business meeting and prize drawing will be held at noon.

Rehab staff raise $1,600 for charity

HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Rock Hill staff members raised more than $1,600 through a hospital fundraiser to donate to local charities. The hospital departments were divided into six teams and each group created gift baskets that were raffled off.

The money raised was divided between three local nonprofits which included Pilgrims Inn, Children’s Attention Home and Palmetto Volunteers.

Chambers launch business competition

Gaston Regional and Montcross Area chambers of commerce has launched the Launch Pad, a business plan competition similar to television’s “Shark Tank.”

Grants will be awarded for first place,$12,500; second, $7,500; and third, $3,500.

The final competition will be held Oct. 17 at Gastonia Conference Center.

Small businesses or entrepreneurs with a desire to further develop existing business or start a business in Gaston County with ongoing mentoring and exposure are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be available Wednesday, May 1, and are due by June 28.

The Launch Pad committee will review all applications and contact all applicants on July 19. All applicants will receive constructive feedback. Applicants will present their idea to the committee on Sept.10, where they will receive constructive recommendations to improve their presentation in anticipation of the Oct. 17 live competition.
