OMS teacher of year
LAKE WYLIE Oakridge Middle School principal Will Largen announces media specialist Kathy Corbiere as the school’s 2013-2014 teacher of the year.
Corbiere graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s in business finance and worked in banking and travel. After many years as a stay-at-home mom and a regular school volunteer, she returned to the classroom to earn her K-6 teaching credential and a master’s in information and library studies. She has worked for 17 years as a media specialist at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary in Charlotte, Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, and for the last two years at Oakridge. She has a son in Charlotte and a daughter and son-in-law serving in the Navy in Groton, Conn. She and her husband, Dick, live in Sharon.
Workshop for teachers open
YORK COUNTY The York Soil & Water Conservation District is taking registrations through May 17 for its annual Summer Conservation Science Workshop open to all K-5 teachers in York County.
The workshop will be held 8 a.m.-1 p.m. June 25-27 at Clover High School. Cost is $30, which includes all materials and 15 continuing education credits.
Teachers will learn hands-on instructional strategies to teach standards-driven soil, water and natural resource concepts. For more information, call 803-684-3137.
Farm Bureau offers scholarship
YORK COUNTY York County Farm Bureau offers a scholarship to a student pursuing a higher education in agriculture or in an agriculturally related field.
Applicants must have completed a first semester at a four-year school of higher education. The amount awarded will be $1,000 annually, to be awarded $500 each semester.
This scholarship will be awarded to a resident of York County based on character, leadership abilities, and dedication to agriculture or a related field.
