Buy barbecue, help CAAC May 24 in Lake Wylie

The Lake Wylie Bi-Lo will hold a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 24, to benefit Clover Area Assistance Center.

Plates cost $6 and includes barbecue, bun, slaw, chips and a homemade cookie. Orders of five or more plates can be delivered to a business. To place an order in advance, call 803-831-8865.

The Lake Wylie Bi-Lo employees hold several events throughout the year and participate in an annual golf tournament to support CAAC. Last year, they donated $6,451 to CAAC.

Libraries closed for holiday, post summer hours

All York County libraries will be closed May 25-27 for Memorial Day.

In addition, the York County Library in Rock Hill will be closed on Sundays during the summer, beginning May 26.

Effective May 28, all York County libraries will begin closing one hour earlier, Monday-Thursday. The main library in Rock Hill will close at 8 p.m. and branch libraries in Fort Mill, Clover, Lake Wylie and York will close at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday business hours will not change.

Blood drives scheduled

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will hold a blood drive from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at Regal Manchester Stadium, 1935 Cinema Drive, Rock Hill. Donors will receive a free movie ticket.

Conservation district meeting May 28

The next commissioners meeting of the York Soil and Water Conservation District will be at 4:30 p.m. May 28 at the USDA Service Center, 1460 E. Alexander Love Hwy.

Register for Life Line Screening

Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 15000 York Road, will host Life Line Screening for stroke and osteoporosis on June 7.

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions, such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk also is offered and is appropriate for both men and women.

Donations needed for lake fireworks

Donations needed for the Lake Wylie Community Fourth of July Fireworks to be held at dusk July 4, launching from YMCA Camp Thunderbird.

The fireworks display is funded solely through community donations.

KOP accepting donations

Kenya Orphanage Project is accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at KOP’s storage area near Rey Azteca in Lake Wylie Plaza.

Donations of gently used children’s and adult clothing, shoes, socks, sports uniforms, games and toys, board games, balls of all kinds, bicycles, stuffed animals, backpacks, books, CDs, family-friendly DVDs, bath and hand towels, tablecloth and linen, bed sheets, blankets, curtains, toiletries, hand and garden tools are needed.

CAAC seeks Food Pantry volunteers

Clover Area Assistance Center, 1130 Hwy. 55 E., seeks volunteers to help customers shop directly from the Food Pantry shelves.

Volunteers need to commit three and half hours on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays.

Photo competition under way

The Arts Council of York County presents its ninth annual Photography Competition and the fourth annual Youth Photography Competition at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St. The deadline for entries is 4 p.m. June 2.

Adult entry fee costs $30 for up to two entries, or $20 for up to two entries for members.

Youth, grades K-12, cost $5 per photo, or $3 per photo for members.

The selected entries in the adult competition will be exhibited in the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts from June 20-July 28, and recognized at a free, public reception at the Center for the Arts at 6 p.m. June 20.

Awards or adults are $500, $250 and $100 for top three spots. Youth award winners receive $50, $30 and $20 for top spots.

Short film entries accepted

The Underexposed Film Festival YC will be held Nov. 15-16 at Community Performance Center.
