Lions deliver new phone directory, help charities

June 3, 2013

— The River Hills Lions wrapped up their largest fundraising project of the year this week by delivering the 2013-2014 River Hills phone and email directory to more than 1,100 homes and 700 advertisers.

This year’s directory, which raised more than $74,000, is the most successful since 2005. All proceeds go to local and state charities.

John Cathcart, along with JP Russell, Bob Daily and Gene Berres, assumed responsibility for the project when long-time directory chairman Ken Shaffer died earlier this year. Cathcart said it was not unusual to spend eight hour days putting the final pieces together.

“Thanks to our advertisers, we exceeded our goal,” Cathcart said. “The economy is better, businesses are improving and they are giving back to the community.”

The Lions work year-round canvassing residents and businesses to verify and update information. A professional graphics designer is hired to help with ad layouts and cover design.

Susan Thomas of the directory production team said, “It has been fun. There was always someone to step in to help. It’s not work when it’s a collaborative effort for a good cause.”

Along with River Hills residents’ telephone numbers and emails, the directory includes phone numbers for government services and elected officials, as well as charities, churches, hospitals, utilities, schools, newspapers, organizations, and children’s activities.

The business pages contain the list of local merchants and service providers.

Copies are available for $8 at the River Hills Community Association office.
