York County Sheriff unveils new patrol cars

— The York County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new patrol vehicles Tuesday at Winthrop Lake in Rock Hill.

The department will transition from Ford Crown Victorias to the newer Ford Interceptors. Ford stopped production of the Crown Victoria last year.

The new Ford Interceptors have several safety designs integrated into the vehicles and the new cars perform better than their predecessors, officials say.

The sheriff’s office has purchased seven Interceptor sedans for $24,077 each and two Ford Interceptor SUVs for $26,000.

Gas mileage and safety were two of the key factors in the decision to go with the Interceptors. The sedans get an average gas mileage of 18 mpg, compared to the Crown Vics 14 mpg. The Interceptors also have all-wheel drive and back-up cameras and sensors.
