Lake Wylie student gets gold in NYC

June 18, 2013

— Gaston Day School students, including one from Lake Wylie, were first greeted by First Lady Michelle Obama via video. Then they heard speeches from actress Sara Jessica Parker, designer Zac Posen and musician Usher at Carnegie Hall during the 90th annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in New York City.

More than 800 teens, family members and teachers, representing 46 states, attended the ceremony including Holland Haag of Lake Wylie, Porter Yelton of Kings Mountain and Jane Voss of Gastonia. Haag earned her award in art, and Yelton and Voss for writing.

Presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the country’s longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative teenagers.

The celebration kicked-off May 31 when the Empire State Building was lit in gold to honor student winners.
