At least 16 people were rescued from a sandbar in the northern part of Lake Wylie on Thursday afternoon after they were caught in a severe storm rolling through, Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Rob Brisley said.
As waters grew rough just after 4 p.m., a fire boat on patrol in the lake near Girl Scout Road came across a group of swimmers “in distress” near the popular hang-out spot, Brisley said. The storm left them unable to make it back to their boats.
Charlotte firefighters dove into the water and saved eight people. Rescuers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the New Hope Fire Department in Gaston County saved eight more. None of them were wearing life jackets.
Some of them needed medical treatment, but “early indications are that the conditions are not life threatening,” Brisley said.
